Impounded car by police I need temporary insurance just TO MOVE IT HOME?

I sold a friend a car that I use to own.
and he drove it with no insurance or drivers lic.

he got pulled over and the car got impounded
I know I will need insurance but I plan to get it out and sell it

is there a way I can get temp insurance on this car just to move it from the impound to my house.

I live in the state of california

thanks

Did your friend pay you for the car? Did you give him a bill of sale? Did you give him the title? Did he have it registered and plated?
If so, do you not think it is his car, not yours?

  1. Just have it towed to wherever.

call a local insurance group and ask for 3 day transfer insurance. It will cover you for just 3 days but you can move it and then store it until you can sell it. Pretty cheap too !

If you sold the car to your friend why is it not his responsibility? How can you sell it again?

You will need to register it as well if you want to drive it home. Surrender the plates on it and have the buyer get plates and insurance before you release unless he/she uses a towtruck.

  5. If he paid you, it’s his car. you can’t sell it, except for him. O’wise if he hasn’t paid for it, why did you let him take it? Friends notwithstanding, there are things you don’t do.

You have two options…If you or your friend had insurance already on another vehicle, he can take the sales receipt in with a copy of the proof of insurance for the other vehicle and that should suffice. In most states, you have a guaranteed 30 day grace period of insurance extending from one policy to a new purchase. On the 31st day, that vehicle is uninsured.

Or you can have it towed. Insurance is not required to put it on a flat bed and drive it home.

Either way, I would talk to your insurance agent to see if they have another option.

  8. You can get a moving permit from the DMV to drive it for one day without insurance. At least you used to be able to. Check with DMV.

If you are not still the registered owner of the car, you can’t get it out of impound. Only the registered owner can get it out. And you have to have proof.

If it was transferred into the friend’s name you can not take it.

  9. Since it’s CA, it will stay in impound for 30 days. At the end of that period you can have it towed out, or have insurance on it to drive it, your choice.
