You can get some great information online regarding short term car insurance. These are typically policies that are available for anything less than 6 months. This may be very good for you if you have a vehicle that you know you will only be using temporarily.
However, if you do have an existing long term policy, adding and subtracting vehicles is relatively easy to do, so in most instances, the short term policy is specific for individuals who may not normally have a vehicle insured at all but then require something for a short period of time.
The majority of these short term car insurance policies are available from brokers instead of direct from the underwriter / carrier. The main reason for this is that brokers handle the work that normally would have to be done internally by the company in exchange for a flat rate with a percentage of the share above the buy rate.
When I called to talk to one of the larger companies, they confirmed that they don’t setup short term insurance. I don’t know if they lady I spoke with knew or not, but I sneaked in a question about the other insurance carriers to see if she believed any of them also had the brokers do this with short term. She seemed to indicate that they did although there is some confusion on this point.
I suspect there are some carriers that if you go direct, you can still setup something like this. Either way, a few phone calls later, you should have plenty to work with.
Some of the things you may want to know from the broker or insurance company directly is whether or not other drivers of the vehicle would also be insured. If the vehicle is insured separately or if it is a driver-specific insurance policy.
Of course cost is an issue and you should also be able to get some insight on whether or not there are any other “hidden” costs or other considerations, such as a cancellation policy, etc.
Last thing to do is make sure you know what is covered, run through a scenario or two with your broker regarding a potential accident including injuries to the passengers to see what would be covered and based on who is at fault (you or the other driver) as there are different policies available.
