I am going over to UK to visit my parents and want to get car insurance on their car. Apparently they can not add me to their insurance as their company no longer does that. I am not a resident of the UK, just visiting for 6 weeks with Australian and International licence. Does anyone know of any way I could possibly get car insurance for the time I’m there?
For car insurance the quickest way to get a low quote is do a car policy comparison. Be sure to choose the same coverage levels, you can get an accurate quote to compare against others. Use the same zip code, car make and model, mileage and driving history to ensure you get an apples to apples comparison. To get mulitple auto insurance quotes, go to http://www.simpleautoquotes.com/Auto-Insurance.html and you can compare the major auto insurance companies.
Can you get short term car insurance in the UK with Austrlaian/international licence?

you could take out a policy for 12 months. pay by direct debit.on a monthly basis.. then cancel it on the 2nd payment…?

1st off were you born in the UK? Can you afford to buy a car that will pass the UK MOT, insure/reg for 3 mths & take out yr own car insurance? Then get yr parents to sell it once you have left. The only other way I know of is to hire a car with insurance built in but that is more expensive (look @ the rental charge incl. insurance per wk x 6 = v/expensive). My Dad recently visited the UK & bought a car, then had a relly sell it when he returned to Aust.
Alternatively, check yr travel insurance policy to see if they have a clause to cover rental cars – not just for your health or stuff being stolen from it but any damage to the car itself. If you don’t have a policy yet ring yr travel agent (make sure they are reputable, they might be able to offer a solution). Good luck.
Have a fab holiday.

My uncle came over from Sydney last year. We bought a cheap car for him and took out a one year policy. It was quite expensive, but after 3 months when he left, We simply canceled the policy and got a reasonable refund. I think this is the only way you can do it. We tried all the other avenues and got no-where.
PS if you hire a car for the 3 months then you are looking at around £1100 including insurance.
